You can disable it quickly with the following Registry tweak: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 Update #2: In Windows 10 version 1607 the option to disable Web Search and Cortana was removed again! „AllowSearchToUseLocation“=dword:00000000 If you are affected by this issue, apply the following Registry tweak: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 Update #3: In Windows 10 version 1803, the tweaks mentioned below may not work. To save your time, you can download the following ready-to-use Registry files: To make the changes done by the Registry tweak take effect, you need to sign out and sign in to your user account.Note: Even if you are running 64-bit Windows you must still create a 32-bit DWORD value. Go to the following Registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer.Please note that a "can't connect to Search, make sure you've got Internet" is displayed in the start menu if you block Search from making outbound connections.Update #4: Windows 10 version 2004, 20H2, and above use a different tweak. When you run searches now, web results are not displayed anymore in the search results. Switch the action from "allow the connection" to "block the connection".Scroll down until you find "search" listed there and double-click on the entry.Click on the "name header" of the outbound rules listing to sort the listing alphabetically.Tap on the Windows-key, type Windows Firewall select the "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" (in newer versions of Windows 10 "Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security") result, and hit enter.You may need to block "cortana" instead, but that may affect the functionality of the digital assistant as well. Note: Search is listed as an option in stable builds, but most recent Insider Builds don't seem to have that entry anymore. ![]() If you open the firewall configuration, you will notice that a Search rule is set there already which you just need to disable. What you may do instead for now is block access to Search using the Windows Firewall.
